Elongation (Maad)

(1) The Natural Maad  مد طبيعى

Letters of Maad:

(1) Alif (ألف) preceded by fathah

(2) Waw (و) preceded by damah

(3) Yaa (ى) preceded by kasrah

Examples:

كان

يكون

Second “yaa” in ” يُعطِيك “

(2) Maad “Motasel” and “Monfasel”المد المتصل والمنفصل

There are some details to know which one is Maad “Motasel” and which one is “Monfasel” and there are different options for the number of beats “عدد الحركات” for each one of them. In order to simplify the rule, we will consider only one option, and therefore we state the rule as follows.

If you have letter of Maad followed by “Hamzah” , then elongate the letter of Maad four beats “حركات”.

Examples:

(3) Maad Lazim Kalimee مد لازم كلمى

The letter of Maad must be elongated six beats “حركات”

(a) Maad Lazim Kalimee Motaqal:  If the letter of Maad followed by shadah شده

Examples:

(b) Maad Lazim Kalimee Mokhafaf:  If the letter of Maad followed by secoon  سكون in the same word

Example:

(4) Maad Lazim Harfiee “حرفى”

This is for the discrete  letters “الحروف المُقطَّعة” which have elongation sign  at the beginning of the chapter.

Examples:

(5) Al-Mad Al-Arid lelskoon and Maad Aleen

(A) Maad ‘Arid Lil-Sukoon

المد العارض للسكون

Maad ‘Arid Lil-Sukoon means “temporary elongation for stopping”.

If a natural Maad is followed by a letter at the end of the a word, which has been made Saakin temporarily because the reader has to stop at the word, the reader should prolong the natural Maad to apply this rule ” المد العارض للسكون” .

This kind of Maad can be elongated 2, 4 , or 6 beats.

Note: this rule is applied only if the reader stops on that word. If the reader doesn’t stop on it, it should be considered as a natural Maad which must be elongated 2 beats.

Examples:

الْقَيُّومُ

الْإِنجِيلَ

الْفُرْقَانَ ۗ

وَاللَّـهُ عَزِيزٌ ذُو انتِقَامٍ

(B) Madd Al-leen

مد اللين

Leen “لين ” in Arabi means easy.

The leen letters are a Waao or Yaa with skoon preceded by a letter with Fataha.  This Maad is only performed if the leen letter is followed by a letter at the end of the word and the reciter will stop. Then the last letter will be Saakin due to stop,  and the reciter should prolong the Leen letter 2, 4, or 6 beats . If the reciter doesn’t stop, this Maad is not applied.

Examples:

قُرَيْشٍ

وَالصَّيْفِ

الْبَيْتِ

خَوْفٍ
